Layer Inoculation as a New Technology to Resist Volatile Fatty Acid Inhibition during Solid-State Anaerobic Digestion: Methane Yield Performance and Microbial Responses

Solid-state anaerobic digestion is easily inhibited by high volatile fatty acid induced total solids, although it a promising technology. Previous studies on inhibition mainly focused solid content, co-digestion substrates, and external additives. The present study proposed new inoculation method named layer compared to premixing in the solid-state of pig manure maize straw. results showed that cumulative CH4 yields from (211.5 mL/g-VS) were 5.64 times more than (37.5 under low ratio (25%), with values being greater 30.0 mg/g. concentrations VFAs acetic decreased dramatically during days 18–43. Layer also wider specific methane yield peaks shorter startup inoculation. Methanosphaerula Methanothrix most dominant genera, while genus did not correlate acids, pH, or ammonia nitrogen. hydrogenotrophic methanogen pathway was predominant digestion; shift acetoclastic occurred inoculation, stable (61.20–68.88%). This short paper describes the changes in VFA and hydrogen production in time, during an anaerobic microbial digestion where the organic waste material was given as a substrate. The experiment showed that the reaction run most efficiently between 6 and 10th hour of the reaction time. This can be an indicator for future experiments on VFA and hydrogen production optimisation.
